CNC Machining Tolerances & Precision

Precision is the reason most customers choose CNC machining over other manufacturing processes. Our equipment holds tight tolerances consistently, whether you need one part or a hundred.

Standard Tolerance

±0.05mm

Applied to all machined dimensions unless otherwise specified. Suitable for the majority of engineering applications including clearance fits, general assemblies, and non-critical features. This is our default tolerance for all CNC turned and milled parts.

Precision Tolerance

±0.0125mm

Available on critical dimensions where tighter control is required. Typical for bearing fits, seal grooves, precision bores, and mating surfaces. Specify precision tolerance requirements on your drawing or in your quote request.

What Affects Achievable Tolerance?

  • -Material — Aluminium and brass machine to tight tolerances more easily than stainless steel or hardened engineering steels. Material stability after heat treatment also affects final dimensions.
  • -Part geometry — Thin walls, long unsupported lengths, and deep pockets are harder to hold to tight tolerance. Design features with adequate wall thickness and reasonable aspect ratios for best results.
  • -Feature size — Smaller features generally allow tighter tolerances. A 10mm bore can be held tighter than a 100mm bore.
  • -Surface finish — Finer surface finishes (lower Ra values) typically correlate with tighter dimensional control. As-machined finish is usually Ra 1.6-3.2.

How CNC Machining Pricing Works

CNC machining pricing is based on four main factors. Understanding what drives the cost helps you design parts that are efficient to manufacture — saving you money without compromising on quality.

Our instant quoting tool calculates all of these factors automatically from your STEP file. The price you see includes material, machining, setup, and any specified finishing — there are no hidden fees. Read our comparison of CNC machining vs 3D printing if you are deciding between processes.

Machine Time

The primary cost driver. Complex geometry, tight tolerances, and multiple operations increase cycle time. Simple turned parts are faster and cheaper than multi-axis milled parts.

Material

Material grade, diameter, and length all affect cost. Stainless steel and engineering steels cost more than mild steel or aluminium. Larger bar stock diameters cost more per kilogram.

Setup & Fixturing

Each unique setup (chuck change, fixture change, re-chucking) adds time. Parts that can be completed in a single setup cost less. Our main + sub spindle lathe minimises re-chucking.

Finishing

As-machined parts have no additional finishing cost. Anodising, powder coating, plating, and polishing are priced separately based on part size and finish type.

Tips to Reduce CNC Machining Cost

  • -Avoid unnecessarily tight tolerances on non-critical features. Specify precision only where it matters.
  • -Use standard bar stock sizes where possible to minimise material waste and setup.
  • -Design features that can be machined with standard tooling — avoid very small internal radii, extremely deep pockets, or features requiring special cutters.
  • -Consolidate operations: parts that can be completed in one setup cost less than those needing multiple re-chucks.
  • -Choose free-machining grades (303 stainless, C360 brass, 6061 aluminium) where material properties allow — they cut faster and cost less per part.

CNC Machining Quote — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our instant online CNC quoting, materials, tolerances, and turnaround times for custom machined parts in Australia.

What file format do I need for a CNC machining quote?

We accept STEP (.stp / .step) files for instant CNC machining quotes. STEP is the industry-standard 3D solid model format supported by all major CAD software including Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA, and FreeCAD. For custom quotes, we can also work from IGES files or detailed PDF drawings with full dimensioning. DXF and DWG files are not suitable for CNC turning or milling quotes as they lack the 3D geometry needed to calculate machine time.

What is the maximum part size for CNC turning?

Our CNC lathe accepts bar stock up to 40mm diameter through the automatic bar feeder for unattended production runs. For chuck work, we can turn parts up to 100mm maximum diameter. Bar feed jobs are ideal for high-volume production of shafts, bushings, spacers, and fittings. For parts larger than 100mm diameter, contact us to discuss your requirements — we can often accommodate larger work or recommend a suitable approach.

Can you do both CNC turning and milling?

Yes. We offer CNC turning (lathe work) with main and sub spindle capability, allowing complete parts to be machined in a single setup without re-chucking. We also offer CNC milling for prismatic parts, pockets, slots, and complex 3D surfaces. Many components require both turning and milling operations — for example, a shaft with a cross-drilled hole or a flange with bolt holes. We handle the full process in-house at our Jimboomba workshop.

What surface finishes are available for CNC parts?

We offer a range of surface finishes: as-machined (standard, typically Ra 1.6-3.2), bead blasted (uniform matte texture), anodised (clear or colour, for aluminium parts), powder coated (wide colour range, durable finish), zinc plated (corrosion protection for steel), black oxide (mild corrosion resistance, low-cost), and polishing (mirror or satin finish). Specify your finish requirements when requesting a quote and we will include it in the pricing.

What is the minimum order for CNC machining?

There is no minimum order quantity. We machine single prototype parts through to production batches of thousands. Our minimum order value is $45 for CNC machining jobs. Single-part orders are common — many of our customers are engineers and fabricators who need one-off replacement parts, prototypes, or custom fittings.

How accurate is the online CNC machining quote?

Our instant CNC quotes are calculated using real machine time estimates based on your 3D model geometry, selected material, and quantity. For straightforward turned and milled parts, the instant price is production-accurate — what you see is what you pay. For complex multi-operation parts, parts requiring tight tolerances on many features, or components needing special fixturing, we may adjust the quote after reviewing the file. You will always be notified before any price changes.

What materials can be CNC machined?

We CNC machine aluminium (6061-T6, 7075-T6, 2024, 6082), stainless steel (303, 304, 316), mild steel, engineering steels (4140, 4340, EN26, 300M), brass (C360 free-machining), and engineering plastics such as Delrin/acetal and Nylon 6. Each material has different machinability characteristics that affect pricing and lead time. See our material guides for detailed information on properties, grades, and applications.

How long does CNC machining take?

Standard turnaround for CNC machined parts is 5-10 business days depending on complexity, material availability, and current workshop load. Simple turned parts like spacers and bushings are often ready in 3-5 business days. Rush turnaround is available on request for urgent jobs. We ship Australia-wide from our Jimboomba, QLD workshop with tracked freight.

Can you machine hardened steel?

Yes. We regularly machine engineering steels including 4140, 4340, EN26, and 300M in their pre-hardened or normalised states. For parts that need to be hardened after machining, we can coordinate heat treatment with our partner facilities and then finish-machine critical surfaces to final dimensions. If you need a specific hardness (e.g., HRC 28-32), include this in your quote request.

Do you machine prototype quantities?

Absolutely. Prototype and low-volume CNC machining is a core part of our business. There is no minimum order quantity — we regularly machine single parts for engineers validating a design, fabricators needing a custom fitting, or motorsport teams building one-off components. Our instant quoting tool gives you pricing for qty 1 upwards, so you can see the cost before committing.
