Our family has been in Australian manufacturing since 2007 — designing and building custom-engineered systems for some of the country's most demanding industries, including oil and gas, mining, and heavy industrial applications. That's where we learned what proper engineering looks like: the tolerances, the materials, the consequences when something isn't built right.

The next generation grew up in that workshop. We learned hydraulic systems, CNC machining, welding, and fabrication alongside formal engineering study — and that's where the next chapter started.

While working on automotive projects, it became obvious how poor the state of aftermarket parts and manufacturing was in Australia. It wasn't just one product — adapter kits, alternator flip kits, pedal brackets, floor pan covers — most were either non-existent locally or not built to a good standard. Parts were failing because they were designed by people who didn't understand the engineering: the alignment tolerances, shaft materials, fatigue life, why moving components from their factory geometry causes problems. Products were designed loosely, not by engineers who understood what happens under load. And although not everyone can manufacture their own parts, most people can learn CAD and draw a simple bracket, or send a photo of a sketch — but there was nowhere convenient in Australia to actually get it made.

So we decided to fix it properly — starting with a university thesis that dug into the real failure modes: shaft fatigue, coupling types, alignment accuracy, material selection, wear mitigation, manufacturing tolerances. We designed superior products, built prototypes, and tested them on our own vehicles. They worked. The first customers were mates who were desperate for something better than what was on the market.

That work became MechSN — Mechanical S-N, named after the fatigue curve used in engineering design. The name reflected the focus: building parts that are engineered properly, not just machined to a rough shape and shipped. 3D scanning entered the picture as a way to speed up reverse engineering and improve accuracy.

JDL Innovations is what happens when two generations combine forces. The established family manufacturing business brought over 25 years of experience in the industry and the production capability to back it up. MechSN brought the engineering-first product design, the 3D scanning, the online quoting technology, and a generation that grew up with both the workshop skills and the software to connect them. Together as a joined team, we've moved into a brand new, much larger facility at Cerina Circuit in Jimboomba, with a CNC mill on the way. The result is something neither side could have built alone.

The more time we spend in this industry, the more backwards Australia feels. Nobody makes anything here anymore — everything gets sent overseas, and the country loses productivity because of it. Our goal is to change that. We want to build a facility that gives everyday Australians access to high-quality, conveniently ordered, reasonably priced manufacturing — whether they send us a hand sketch or a complete CAD model. Sheet metal, CNC machining, 3D printing, all off an online quoting system, all made in Australia.
