How JDL Compares

Choosing where to get parts laser cut? Here is an honest look at JDL against the alternatives an Australian buyer actually weighs — the US online services everyone admires, the global marketplaces, your local job shop, and ordering overseas. We even tell you when one of them is the better choice.

The honest short version

  • The famous US online services (SendCutSend, OSH Cut) are superb — but they don’t ship to Australia. From here, they aren’t really an option.
  • Global marketplaces (Xometry) are available here, but they’re brokers — your part is routed to one of thousands of shops you never meet.
  • A local job shop is personal but makes you email and wait days for a price; ordering overseas is cheapest at volume but slow, with minimums and customs.
  • JDL is the Australian middle ground: an instant online price in AUD, no minimum, parts made in our own QLD workshop, and shipped to you in days.

General guidance to help you choose — not a claim that JDL wins on every job. The detail and the honest exceptions are below.

The detail, option by option

vs US online laser services (SendCutSend, OSH Cut)

The best instant-quote experiences in the world — and the benchmark we build toward. The catch is simple: they don’t ship to Australia.

What they’re genuinely good at

  • Outstanding instant-quote tooling and huge material ranges — genuinely the experience JDL benchmarks against.
  • Very fast turnaround and slick design feedback for customers inside the US.

The catch for an Australian buyer

  • They ship to the US and Canada only. SendCutSend states it cannot ship outside the US and Canada; OSH Cut ships within the US (Canada for some services). An Australian customer cannot order directly.
  • Reaching Australia means a US freight-forwarder — extra cost, weeks of transit, customs and GST on import, and no local recourse if something is wrong.
  • Prices are in USD and parts are built to US gauges and stock, not Australian metric sheet.

When they’re the better pick: If you have a US or Canadian delivery address, these services are excellent. From Australia, you are paying international freight and lead time for a part we can cut locally this week.

vs global on-demand marketplaces (Xometry, Hubs)

Enormous breadth and a real Australian presence — but a broker that routes your part to one of thousands of shops, not a maker you can build a relationship with.

What they’re genuinely good at

  • Huge process and material breadth — CNC, 3D printing, sheet metal, injection moulding, 200+ materials — through one instant-quote portal.
  • A genuine Australian storefront (xometry.au) and the scale to absorb large, multi-process procurement.

The catch for an Australian buyer

  • It is a marketplace: your part is matched to one of thousands of third-party suppliers across ~30 countries, and you usually don’t know who is actually making it.
  • Quality, turnaround and communication vary with whichever supplier is assigned — you don’t get one consistent shop that knows your parts.
  • Optimised for volume procurement, not a hands-on fabrication relationship for prototypes and low-to-mid volume.

When they’re the better pick: If you need a process we don’t offer (e.g. injection moulding), exotic materials, or one portal to procure many different processes at scale, a marketplace makes sense. For Australian-made laser, bending, turning and scanning from one shop that answers the phone, we’re the better fit.

vs a traditional local job shop

Local and personal, and great for genuinely bespoke work — but you email a drawing and wait days for a price, often with a minimum.

What they’re genuinely good at

  • Local, personal, and able to take on highly bespoke or unusual jobs through a direct conversation.
  • A trusted relationship once established — handy for complex one-offs that don’t fit an online quoter.

The catch for an Australian buyer

  • No instant pricing — you send a drawing and wait 1–5 business days for a quote, which slows every design iteration.
  • Pricing usually isn’t transparent, and many shops carry a $100–500 minimum.

When they’re the better pick: For a complicated, highly bespoke one-off — or if you already have a shop you trust — a traditional quote is fine. For repeatable laser and sheet-metal work you want priced and ordered today, instant online pricing wins. (We give you both: instant quotes, plus engineers you can call.)

vs ordering overseas (China / offshore brokers)

The cheapest unit price at high volume — and the slowest, with minimums, freight, customs and your files leaving the country.

What they’re genuinely good at

  • Lowest per-unit price once you’re ordering in real volume.
  • Deep capacity for very large commodity runs.

The catch for an Australian buyer

  • Minimum order quantities of 50–100+ parts, plus 3–6 weeks production and weeks of freight on top.
  • Your files leave Australia, quality is harder to verify, and communication spans a timezone gap.
  • Import GST, customs and duty land on top of the headline unit price — and a problem part is expensive and slow to remake.

When they’re the better pick: For very high-volume commodity parts where unit price is everything and a multi-week lead time is fine, offshore can be cheaper. For prototypes, iterations and low-to-mid volume you need quickly, local is usually better value once freight, lead time and risk are counted.

When JDL isn’t the right choice

We’d rather you get the right part from the right place than oversell. JDL is the wrong call when:

  • You need rock-bottom unit price on a very large commodity run and a multi-week lead time is fine — an offshore producer will beat us on unit price at volume.
  • You need a process we don’t run in-house, such as injection moulding or exotic-alloy casting — a marketplace like Xometry will route that better than we can.
  • You have a US or Canadian delivery address — SendCutSend or OSH Cut will be faster and cheaper to you there than shipping from Australia.

For just about everything else an Australian engineer, fabricator or maker needs — laser cutting, press-brake bending, CNC turning, 3D printing, scanning — made here, priced instantly and shipped this week, we’re hard to beat.

Frequently asked questions

Does SendCutSend ship to Australia?

No. As at June 2026, SendCutSend ships to the United States and Canada only and states it cannot make exceptions, so Australian customers cannot order directly. The only route is a US freight-forwarder, which adds international shipping cost, weeks of transit, and customs and GST on import. JDL gives you the same upload-and-order experience, made in Australia and shipped domestically.

Is there an Australian alternative to SendCutSend or OSH Cut?

Yes — that’s exactly what JDL is. Upload a DXF or STEP file, get an instant price, and order online, the same way you would with the big US services. The difference is your parts are laser cut and fabricated in our Jimboomba, QLD workshop, priced in AUD with GST included, and shipped to you domestically — no USD pricing, no international freight, no customs.

Is Xometry available in Australia?

Yes, Xometry operates an Australian site (xometry.au) with instant quoting across many processes. The thing to understand is that Xometry is a marketplace: your part is matched to one of thousands of third-party manufacturers across roughly 30 countries, so you usually don’t know who is making it, and quality and turnaround vary with the supplier assigned. With JDL, we make your part ourselves, in our own workshop, every time.

Who actually makes my part when I order from JDL?

We do — on our own machines in Jimboomba, Queensland. We’re not a broker that forwards your job to another shop, and we don’t send your files overseas. You can talk to the engineers cutting your parts, in your timezone.

Is local laser cutting more expensive than ordering overseas?

For very high-volume commodity parts, an offshore producer can be cheaper per unit. But once you add minimum order quantities, 3–6 weeks of production, weeks of freight, customs and GST — and the cost of a remake if something is wrong — local is usually better value for prototypes and low-to-mid volume, and far faster. We’re honest about this: if you’re running tens of thousands of identical parts and lead time doesn’t matter, overseas may win on price.

How fast can I get parts compared with an overseas order?

JDL’s standard turnaround is 5–7 business days with domestic shipping (free over $200 inc GST). A typical overseas order is 3–6 weeks in production plus 2–6 weeks of international freight, before customs. For anything you need this month, local is dramatically faster.

Can I get an instant price like the big online services?

Yes. Upload a DXF or STEP file to our instant quoter and you’ll see a real price in seconds — calculated from your part’s geometry and our actual machine parameters, not a rough estimate. No account, no email-and-wait. Parts with bends can be sent as a STEP and we unfold the flat pattern for you automatically.
