Formulas Used
Flat Sheet / Plate
Weight (kg) = Length (mm) × Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) × Density (g/mm³) ÷ 1000
Round Bar
Weight (kg) = π × (Diameter/2)² × Length × Density ÷ 1000
Round Tube / Pipe
Weight (kg) = π × (OD/2)² − (OD/2 − Wall)²) × Length × Density ÷ 1000

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate steel weight?
Steel weight is calculated as Volume x Density. For sheet: Length x Width x Thickness x Density. For round bar: pi x (Diameter/2)^2 x Length x Density. For tube: pi x ((OD/2)^2 - (ID/2)^2) x Length x Density. Mild steel density is 7,850 kg/m3 (0.00785 g/mm3). Enter your dimensions above and the calculator does the rest.
What is the density of stainless steel?
Stainless steel 304 has a density of 8,000 kg/m3 (7.93-8.06 depending on grade). Stainless 316 is slightly denser at 8,000 kg/m3. For comparison, mild steel is 7,850 kg/m3, aluminium is 2,710 kg/m3, and copper is 8,960 kg/m3. The density determines both weight and material cost per part.
How much does aluminium weigh per square metre?
Aluminium sheet weight per square metre depends on thickness. At 1mm thick: 2.71 kg/m2. At 2mm: 5.42 kg/m2. At 3mm: 8.13 kg/m2. At 5mm: 13.55 kg/m2. At 10mm: 27.1 kg/m2. Aluminium is roughly one-third the weight of steel at the same thickness, which is why it is popular for weight-sensitive applications.
How do I estimate material cost from weight?
Material cost = Weight (kg) x Price per kg. Approximate Australian prices: mild steel $3-4/kg, stainless 304 $8-12/kg, stainless 316 $10-15/kg, aluminium 5052 $10-14/kg, copper $15-25/kg, brass $12-18/kg. Prices vary by supplier, quantity, and market conditions. The calculator above includes approximate material cost estimates.
