Where to Buy 3D Scans Online

Looking for ready-made 3D scans of automotive parts, gearboxes, engine bays, and more? Here are the best places to buy high-quality 3D scan files online.

Why Buy a 3D Scan?

Not everyone has access to a 3D scanner, and scanning a part yourself takes time, equipment, and skill. Buying a pre-made 3D scan gets you accurate geometry instantly — ready for reverse engineering, adapter design, 3D printing, or reference measurements.

Common use cases:

  • [Automotive conversions](/services/automotive-parts) — You need the exact dimensions of a gearbox bellhousing to design an adapter plate, but you don't have the gearbox on hand
  • Custom fabrication — Designing a bracket, mount, or enclosure that fits around an existing component
  • 3D printing — Printing a replacement part or prototype that mates with an existing assembly
  • CAD reference — Importing a scan into Fusion 360 or SolidWorks as a reference body for your design

Where to Find 3D Scans

JDL Innovations (jdlinnovations.au)

We maintain a growing library of high-accuracy 3D scans, primarily focused on automotive and industrial components. Our catalogue includes:

All scans are captured with professional structured light scanners and supplied as high-resolution mesh files. Most include multiple file formats.

GrabCAD

A large community library of CAD models, including some 3D scans. Quality varies significantly — some are professional-grade, others are rough phone scans. Free to download but you need to create an account. Best for common mechanical components and hardware.

Sketchfab

Primarily a 3D model viewing platform, but many creators sell downloadable 3D scans. Strong in cultural heritage, architecture, and organic shapes. Less focused on engineering and automotive parts.

CGTrader / TurboSquid

Large 3D model marketplaces. Some sellers offer 3D scans, but these platforms are primarily aimed at visual artists and game developers rather than engineers. Models may not be dimensionally accurate.

Thingiverse / Printables

Free 3D model repositories. Occasionally you'll find 3D scans, but most content is designed models for 3D printing. Dimensional accuracy is not guaranteed.

What to Look for in a 3D Scan

Not all 3D scans are equal. Before buying, check:

  1. Accuracy — What scanner was used? Professional structured light scanners (±0.05mm) produce far more accurate results than phone LiDAR scans (±5-10mm).
  1. Resolution — How detailed is the mesh? For engineering work, you want at least 0.1-0.5mm triangle size. For visual reference, lower resolution is fine.
  1. File format — STL and OBJ are universal mesh formats. If you need to do CAD work, you'll want to convert to STEP (see our conversion guide).
  1. Completeness — Does the scan cover the full part, or are there missing areas? Undercuts and internal features are hard to scan and are often incomplete.
  1. Scale — Is the scan at 1:1 real-world scale? Always verify by checking a known dimension.

When to Buy vs. Scan Yourself

Buy a scan when:

  • You don't have the physical part available
  • You don't own a scanner
  • Someone has already scanned the exact part you need
  • You need it quickly

Scan it yourself when:

  • The part is unique or modified
  • You need specific areas captured that a generic scan might miss
  • You need the highest possible accuracy for your specific application
  • The part is already in your workshop

Need a Custom Scan?

If you can't find the scan you need in any online library, we offer custom 3D scanning services. Send us the part (or bring it to our workshop in Jimboomba, QLD) and we'll scan it for you. Need the scan converted to a solid model? Check out our guide on converting scans to solid bodies in Fusion 360. Request a quote →
